Card Tricks and the CRT

The Sensual Card Trick

The following video demonstrates a trick that motivates some of the concepts that we have introduced earlier in this lesson.

You Must Take an Oath

Before we connect card tricks to number theory, you need to take an oath. And we need to describe a way of ordering the deck, known as the Si Stebbins stack.

Back to the Magic Tricks

In this video we see how modular arithmetic was used to perform the first two magic tricks. You should be able to make your own, similar magic tricks with the ideas that this video presents.

Connecting to the CRT

This video describes formulas for the Si Stebbins stack that rely on the CRT formulas we’ve addressed earlier in this lesson. We will be describing formulas that do two things: if we are given a position in the stack, we can determine what card it is. And if we are given a card, we can determine its position in the stack.

The CRT Formula

This video derives the magic formula that is used to determine the position of a card in a Si Stebbins Stack.
